September 2015 Newsletter – Visiting a Partner, Course Material Added

This is the second newsletter targeted to PBDD’s partner agencies.

Our intention is to visit partners, or potential partners, whenever our personal travel puts us in the vicinity. We are going to be in New Orleans for the Electronics Reuse Conference in early November, and hope to visit Lutheran Social Services of North Florida.

We’ve added course material on Using the Internet and on Setting up Email from the open-classes on Tech Tuesday that target specific technology topics to the training material from People’s Resource Center in Wheaton, Illinois. All information is presented under Creative Commons license with an expectation of attribution to the original source. We encourage you to use and share this material. If you have material to share, but aren’t sure how, please contact Barry Glicklich or myself.

The period for comments on the FCC Broadband Lifeline Proposal ended on August 31st. Since the FCC website was down, we gathered a number of comments and made them available in a blog post. Thanks to the National Digital Inclusion Alliance for raising awareness and coordinating responses on this important topic.

Since we are based in Illinois, we filed as a nonprofit with Illinois as well as the federal government. Turns out we can only solicit donations in certain states, unless we file in the other states. Given we’re web-based, we’re not completely sure what it means to solicit funds in a given state. We’re in the process of establishing a relationship with a tax lawyer familiar with the issues who will work with us pro bono. Does anyone have any experience to offer?

If you’re going to be at the Electronics Reuse Conference in New Orleans in November, drop us a line and we’ll look for you.

Please feel free to contact me via email if you have any questions or comments.Katherine LatoVP-Communications at PBDD
